Chapter Twenty-Eight

Sinclair stood in front of the mirror of the bathroom just off her bedroom, where Rett lay tangled in her Italian-made, Egyptian cotton sheets, fast asleep and naked as the day he was born. It had taken every ounce of willpower she could muster to extract herself from his arms and get dressed for work.

She’d spent most of the past week in Rett’s company, and she’d been enjoying every minute with him. Being with Rett put her at ease. He was funny and sweet. And as much as she bristled over it, she appreciated how protective he was.

Maybe she’d only agreed to take their relationship public as a way of pissing off her mother—who hated Rett—and to get her to stop with the constant matchmaking and pressure to get married. But her relationship with Rett had quickly escalated to much more than that.

No, that wasn’t true. The relationship had begun as more than that. They’d developed a friendship and mutual respect for each other over the past few months. It made her belly flutter to realize she felt something deeper than friendship or lust for Rett.

Was it possible she was falling for him?

Sin shut her eyes and inhaled deeply.

There had always been something holding Teddy back from truly committing to their relationship. As much as she’d like to put the blame squarely on Gwen’s shoulders, the truth was that she’d lost Teddy, if she ever really had him, long before Gwen came into the picture.

Rett already had one foot out the door. She’d only be setting herself up for more pain and disappointment if she gave her heart to a man whose mind and heart were clearly elsewhere.

Since Teddy, she’d managed her expectations. She’d focused on her career and dated for fun, while keeping an eye out for the elusive Mr. Right—the man who would check off all of the little boxes on her dream guy checklist. She hadn’t been willing to put her heart on the line again. And she’d always been content with her life. But seeing how happy Dexter and Dakota were together and her escalating feelings for Rett had made her wonder if she really did want more.

Sin heaved a quiet sigh and glanced toward the bedroom where Rett lay asleep.

Maybe, with the right guy, she could focus on her career and have a loving, romantic relationship.

Sin tiptoed into the bedroom and selected a pair of simple gold hoops from her jewelry chest.

“Leaving?” Rett’s gruff morning voice startled her. One arm was flung over his eyes, and the sheet was settled precariously low on his waist, exposing the fine trail of hair down his belly leading to parts she knew all too well.

You’ve got an early morning meeting. There’s no time for that.

Sin tore her eyes away from Rett’s bare chest. “I have a standing quarterly meeting with Douglas. He likes to go to the Krispy Kreme over in Nags Head. It’s the only time Ruth lets him have doughnuts.
